Our large rugs (230-349 cm)
Our large rugs, between 230 and 349 cm wide, are made for generous spaces. They give a big room real structure and carve out a properly defined zone: a complete seating area, a king-size bedroom with a comfortable overhang, a dining room for six to eight. It is also the size that transforms a large room the most: too small a rug in a big space simply gets lost and looks like a budget compromise.
When is a large size the right call?
Large rugs come into their own in several situations:
- A large living room of 25-40 m²: a 250×350 cm takes in the sofa, the armchairs and the coffee table
- King-size bedroom (180-200 cm bed): a 250×350 cm rug under the bed with 60 cm of overhang
- Dining room for six to eight: 250×350 cm under a 180×100 cm table
- Open-plan living and dining: one large rug marks out one of the two zones
- Loft or family room: it gives an open space its structure
The main sizes
- 250×350 cm: the most requested "large living room" size
- 300×300 cm (square): for square rooms or XXL corner sofas
- 240×340 cm: the European equivalent of 250×350
The styles available in large sizes
Most styles are represented in this range, with a few nuances. Plain textured rugs, Berbers, shaggy and modern designs are readily available. Oriental and Persian rugs in a large size are beautiful but cost more. Faded vintage rugs in a large size are rare pieces and much sought after.
Which material to go for?
For a large rug that sees plenty of traffic:
- High-density polypropylene: hard-wearing, and good value in large sizes
- Polyester shaggy: for a large bedroom or a relaxing corner, with maximum comfort
- Viscose: a beautiful silky sheen, but more delicate, so keep it to low-traffic rooms
The visual effect of a large size
A large rug does more than cover more floor: it completely changes how a room is perceived. It gives the space visual structure, creates a clearly defined zone (seating area, sleeping area) and brings a "boutique hotel" sense of scale you notice straight away. In a large living room, an undersized rug looks marooned in the middle of the floor, the very common "postage stamp" effect. A 250×350 cm in a 30 m² living room radically changes how the whole room hangs together.
Choosing a large rug
My living room is 30 m². What size rug?
My living room is 30 m². What size rug?
In a living room of 30 m², the ideal size is 250×350 cm or 300×400 cm. At this size you can:
- Cover the whole seating area (sofa + armchairs + coffee table)
- Keep 20-30 cm of rug visible around the furniture
- Create a properly defined zone in a large space
Avoid 200×300 cm in a living room this size: it will look out of proportion (the "postage stamp" effect). Better to invest in a genuinely large format.
A large rug in a small room: bad idea?
A large rug in a small room: bad idea?
Not necessarily, but there are a few traps. In a small room (under 20 m²), a large rug of 230×349 cm or more can:
- Visually crush the room if the colour is too dark or the pattern too busy
- Force you to cover almost the whole floor, which is not always the effect you want
- Make adjustments awkward (no floor left visible around the furniture)
A large rug in pale tones or plain texture, on the other hand, can actually open up a small room by creating a continuous floor. The rule: the smaller the room, the paler a large rug needs to be.
A large rug with underfloor heating?
A large rug with underfloor heating?
Yes, with a few precautions. All our rugs in polypropylene and polyester are compatible with underfloor heating provided:
- The thickness stays modest: under 15 mm ideally (no very thick shaggy)
- The temperature does not exceed 28°C at the surface of the rug
- The rug lets heat through (the warmth has to pass through it): no rugs with a very thick latex backing
Our handmade wool rugs are perfectly suited to underfloor heating (wool handles warmth naturally). Plain textured polypropylene rugs with a low pile are an excellent choice.
