Yellow and gold rugs

Q: Mustard yellow: why is this colour so popular?

For several years now, mustard yellow has been the darling of contemporary interiors. Its strengths:Deep enough not to shout: unlike pure yellow, it stays sophisticatedWarm without being dull: it gives a neutral room energy without overpowering itUniversal in its pairings: it works with grey, blue, white, black, brown, green, almost anythingVintage and contemporary at once: it recalls the 50s to 70s while staying resolutely currentIt is the perfect way to bring a measured touch of colour into a neutral interior without going wrong.

Q: Isn't yellow a bit loud for a rug?

It all comes down to the shade you choose. Lemon, pastel or bright yellow can indeed be aggressive in a large format. The sophisticated shades, mustard, ochre, curry, aged gold, stay elegant even in a large rug. A few rules:The bigger the rug, the calmer the shade needs to be (mustard rather than bright yellow)A small bright yellow rug (80×150 cm) can work as a jolt of energyA large yellow rug works better in an otherwise restrained room (white walls, neutral furniture)A yellow and neutral pattern (geometric, oriental) is gentler than a saturated plain yellow

Our gold & yellow rugs

A gold or yellow rug brings sunlit warmth into your home. Overlooked for years in interiors, yellow has come roaring back into contemporary palettes, mostly in sophisticated shades such as mustard and ochre. It injects energy, warms a room visually and creates bright focal points in an otherwise neutral space.

Yellow shades and their personalities

Every shade of yellow sets a very different mood:

Mustard yellow: the contemporary favourite, halfway between yellow and ochre. Sophisticated, and everywhere right now
Ochre / earth yellow: leaning towards brown, with a Mediterranean feel close to terracotta
Straw / pale yellow: light and luminous, very Scandinavian
Curry yellow: deep and spiced, faintly exotic
Gold: with metallic lights (viscose) for a luxurious finish
Saffron yellow: vivid and assertive, for the brave

What to pair a yellow rug with

Yellow is far better when it is well partnered, because it can turn shouty in no time:

Mustard yellow with anthracite grey: the star pairing of modern interiors
Yellow with teal or petrol blue: a vibrant duo, fifties style brought up to date
Yellow with white: fresh and light, very Scandinavian
Ochre with terracotta and olive green: an autumnal Mediterranean palette
Gold with black: Art Deco chic
Mustard with chocolate brown: pure cocooning warmth

Which style of yellow rug?

Yellow works beautifully as:

Geometric patterns: yellow, grey and white in a graphic composition
A faded vintage rug: soft ochre on softened oriental motifs, very boho-chic
Yellow oriental: touches of ochre on tribal motifs, warm and folk-inspired
A mustard textured plain: contemporary restraint with a lift, and nothing overdone

Where to be brave with yellow

Yellow does well in rooms that need energy. In a neutral living room, a small mustard rug as a focal point lifts the whole scheme. In an entrance hall, it adds a note of optimism. In an open-plan kitchen or a dining nook, it sharpens the appetite (a restaurant marketing classic). In a bedroom, stick to the gentle yellows (straw, pale ochre) and avoid the vivid ones, which get in the way of sleep. Yellow is also best avoided in a bathroom (under some lighting it can read as sallow).

A large yellow rug works better in an otherwise restrained room (white walls, neutral furniture)

Yellow: does it work in a bedroom?

It all depends on the intensity. Yellow is stimulating by nature (it activates the nervous system), so:

Bright, saturated yellows: best avoided in a bedroom, as they can disturb sleep
Soft, powdery yellows (straw, pale ochre, ivory yellow): perfect in a bedroom, warm and gentle without being over-stimulating
Aged gold: luxurious and calming in an adult bedroom

In a child's room, soft or pastel yellows work very well and bring a positive energy. In an adult bedroom, a mustard or ochre plain textured rug at the foot of the bed works better than one covering the whole floor.
