Oriental rugs

The oriental rug is a broad textile family covering several craft traditions: Morocco, Iran, Afghanistan, Azerbaijan, the Caucasus and Central Asia. They all share a strong visual language: geometric or stylised floral motifs, richly worked borders, a warm palette of reds, blues and ochres. Beyond its beauty, the oriental rug gives an interior a storytelling soul: every motif tells a story, every tradition carries a culture.

The main oriental families

Our collection draws on several traditions:

• Moroccan / Berber: tribal motifs, diamonds, and usually a pale palette
• Persian: floral medallions, finely drawn curvilinear motifs, a rich palette
• Afghan and Baluch: deep reds and octagonal "elephant's foot" motifs
• Caucasian / Azerbaijani: boldly stylised geometric motifs and strong contrasts
• Patchwork vintage: fragments of oriental rugs pieced together for a boho-chic look that is very much in demand

Where to put an oriental rug

The oriental rug has always belonged in the main living spaces. In a living room, it brings instant warmth and character: an oriental rug in front of a contemporary sofa makes a magnificent contrast. In a dining room, go for short-pile designs so chairs slide easily. In an entrance hall or a corridor, an oriental rug makes a strong statement from the very first step. In a bohemian bedroom, it warms the whole atmosphere.

The oriental rug slots into a lot of different worlds:

• Bohemian and boho-chic: its natural territory, alongside folk textiles and raw materials

The signature colours

The traditional oriental palette is built on warm tones: deep red, terracotta, brown, ochre, golden beige, punctuated by midnight blue, emerald green and black in the motifs. The faded vintage versions offer softened palettes of dusty pink, washed-out blue and pinkish beige, very much in favour right now.

Materials

Our oriental rugs are mainly made from high-density polypropylene (faithful pattern definition, highly durable) or polyester for medium-pile designs. Some premium Persian designs go beyond 3 million points per m² for an ultra-detailed finish. Care: vacuum weekly, and blot spills straight away with a damp cloth.
