Round rugs

The round rug is one of the most effective ways to break up the rigidity of a room. Where most rugs follow the rectangular geometry of rooms and furniture, the round rug introduces a visual curve that softens the mood at once. It creates a strong focal point, marks out an area without shouting about it, and gives a scheme its own signature.

When to choose a round rug

Several situations call for one:

• Under a round table (dining room, kitchen table, round coffee table): the geometry simply agrees
• In a reading corner: around a single armchair, for a genuinely cocooning effect
• In a child's room, or as a baby play mat: safe (no corners) and fun
• In a round entrance hall or lobby: it follows the shape of the space
• Under a central light fitting: it creates a visual "mirror" effect
• To mark out a zone in an open-plan room: it defines the seating area without walling it off

Which diameter?

The standard diameters are:

• 120 cm: a reading corner, a circular bedside rug, a baby play mat
• 160 cm: a round table for four, a compact seating area
• 200 cm: a round table for six, a central living room, a bedroom
• 250 cm and over: large spaces, and a grand circular sweep under a curved sofa

Under a table, allow at least 60 cm of overhang so the chairs stay on the rug.

Which room?

The round rug works especially well in a dining room with a round table (the obvious match), in a bedroom as an unusual bedside rug, in a living room to mark out a relaxing corner, and in a child's bedroom as a play mat. Less suited: a narrow corridor, or a long, thin kitchen.
