Our living room rugs

The living room rug is far more than an accessory: it is the piece that pulls the room together, warms the atmosphere and gives the whole scheme immediate coherence. In a space where sofa, armchairs, coffee table and TV unit all meet, the rug acts as the visual anchor and marks out where everyone gathers.

What size for a living room rug?

The golden rule: the rug must always extend at least 20 cm beyond the sofa on each side. Two layouts dominate in contemporary living rooms. The first puts only the front feet of the sofa on the rug (ideal at 160×230 cm or 200×300 cm in a mid-sized room). The second takes in all the furniture (sofa, armchairs, coffee table) in an XXL format such as 250×350 cm or 300×400 cm. This second option structures an open-plan space and makes it read as a properly defined room.

Which styles work in a living room?

The style follows from your furniture and the mood you want. Modern designer rugs with their clean lines suit a minimalist contemporary living room. Berber-style rugs bring warmth and character to a Scandinavian or bohemian interior. Oriental and Persian rugs dress a classic living room, or one mixed with vintage furniture. For something calm and timeless, textured plains let the decor and the textiles do the talking.

Colours and materials for a living room

The neutral tones (beige, grey, ivory, taupe) remain the safe bets: they fit any scheme and outlast every trend. To commit to a stronger look, be bold with a deep blue, a graphic black or a multicoloured rug with geometric motifs.

On materials, polypropylene remains the most versatile answer: tough, easy to look after and often available in a washable version. Shaggy polyester brings the plush comfort everyone appreciates underfoot. Viscose gives a silky, luminous finish that lifts every colour. At the premium end, our handmade rugs are tufted in wool, Tencel, viscose or a fine blend. For families and pet owners, machine-washable designs combine style with practicality.

Shape and layout

Most living rooms take a rectangular rug, but a round rug under a circular coffee table or in a reading corner makes an interesting visual accent. In a long room or an L-shaped one, consider two separate rugs to mark out two zones (a seating area and a dining area).
