Our living room rugs
The living room rug is far more than an accessory: it is the piece that pulls the room together, warms the atmosphere and gives the whole scheme immediate coherence. In a space where sofa, armchairs, coffee table and TV unit all meet, the rug acts as the visual anchor and marks out where everyone gathers.
What size for a living room rug?
The golden rule: the rug must always extend at least 20 cm beyond the sofa on each side. Two layouts dominate in contemporary living rooms. The first puts only the front feet of the sofa on the rug (ideal at 160×230 cm or 200×300 cm in a mid-sized room). The second takes in all the furniture (sofa, armchairs, coffee table) in an XXL format such as 250×350 cm or 300×400 cm. This second option structures an open-plan space and makes it read as a properly defined room.
Which styles work in a living room?
The style follows from your furniture and the mood you want. Modern designer rugs with their clean lines suit a minimalist contemporary living room. Berber-style rugs bring warmth and character to a Scandinavian or bohemian interior. Oriental and Persian rugs dress a classic living room, or one mixed with vintage furniture. For something calm and timeless, textured plains let the decor and the textiles do the talking.
Colours and materials for a living room
The neutral tones (beige, grey, ivory, taupe) remain the safe bets: they fit any scheme and outlast every trend. To commit to a stronger look, be bold with a deep blue, a graphic black or a multicoloured rug with geometric motifs.
On materials, polypropylene remains the most versatile answer: tough, easy to look after and often available in a washable version. Shaggy polyester brings the plush comfort everyone appreciates underfoot. Viscose gives a silky, luminous finish that lifts every colour. At the premium end, our handmade rugs are tufted in wool, Tencel, viscose or a fine blend. For families and pet owners, machine-washable designs combine style with practicality.
Shape and layout
Most living rooms take a rectangular rug, but a round rug under a circular coffee table or in a reading corner makes an interesting visual accent. In a long room or an L-shaped one, consider two separate rugs to mark out two zones (a seating area and a dining area).
Choosing your living room rug
What size rug should I choose for a living room?
What size rug should I choose for a living room?
It depends on the floor area of your room and where the sofa sits. In a standard living room (15-20 m²), go for 160×230 cm or 200×300 cm placed in front of the sofa. In a large living room (25 m² and over), choose a large rug of 230×349 cm or an extra-large 300×400 cm that takes in all the furniture. The simple rule: the rug should extend at least 20 cm beyond the sofa on each side for a balanced result. For a corner sofa, go for 200×300 cm as a minimum.
Which material is best for a living room rug?
Which material is best for a living room rug?
The choice depends on how you live and how much traffic the room sees. Polypropylene is the most versatile material: hard-wearing, easy to care for and often available in a washable version, which is perfect if you have children or pets. Polyester shaggy brings a plush comfort that is ideal in a relaxing corner. Viscose gives a silky, luminous finish that brings colours to life. For a high-end room, turn to our handmade rugs in wool, Tencel or a wool and viscose blend. For households that are demanding about hygiene, our machine washable rugs combine design and practicality: straight into the machine at 30°C.
How do I look after a living room rug day to day?
How do I look after a living room rug day to day?
Regular care noticeably extends the life of your rug. A few simple habits:
- Vacuum once or twice a week (with the pile, for shaggy designs)
- Turn the rug every six months to even out wear and exposure to sunlight
- Deal with stains straight away by blotting (never rubbing) with a damp cloth
- Air the rug outdoors twice a year to bring the pile back to life
For a deep clean, our washable designs go in the machine at 30°C. The wool and viscose rugs in our handmade range need professional cleaning once a year to protect the fibre.
