Orange & Terracotta Rugs

Q: Terracotta: passing trend or a colour that lasts?

Since 2018-2020, terracotta has become close to timeless. Unlike passing colour fads (millennial pink, for one), it belongs to a deeper movement: the return to natural materials and colours, "slow deco", and the influence of Mediterranean and "wabi-sabi" moods. Its success comes down to a perfect balance: warm enough to feel welcoming, sophisticated enough to avoid dated vintage, universal enough to sit with many styles. It should stay a reference colour for the decade ahead.

Q: Terracotta and grey: a winning pairing?

Absolutely. It is one of the most successful colour pairings in contemporary interiors. Anthracite grey gives a cool, sophisticated base that brings out the warmth of terracotta without letting it take over the room. A few concrete examples:Anthracite sofa + terracotta rug + cream cushions: a perfect contemporary living roomLight grey walls + terracotta rug + wooden furniture: a warm Scandinavian moodGrey furniture + a terracotta and cream Berber: graphic and cosy at onceThe pairing also works in a bedroom: a terracotta shaggy on a wooden floor with pearl grey walls looks superb.

Our terracotta & orange rugs

The orange and terracotta rug has become one of the strongest interior trends around. These earth tones, drawn from Mediterranean fired clay, weathered copper and the setting sun, bring an enveloping warmth like nothing else. They have rehabilitated the orange family, sidelined for years after the excesses of the seventies, in far more sophisticated and contemporary shades.

The shades, and what to do with them

This colour family has real range:

Terracotta: a matt orange leaning pink-brown, the signature colour of interiors since 2020
Rust / cognac: deep brown-orange, autumnal and cosy
Golden ochre: a warm yellow-orange that recalls southern soil
Weathered copper: a soft metallic tone, thoroughly sophisticated
Burnt orange: bright but tempered, far more current than pure orange
Pink ochre / salmon: soft and powdery

Terracotta remains the most popular shade of all, because it combines warmth with sophistication: never too bright, never too brown.

Which colours to pair it with

Terracotta and orange sit remarkably well alongside:

Every beige, cream and sand: a very soft Mediterranean tone-on-tone
Teal or navy: a sophisticated warm-cool contrast
Anthracite grey: a contemporary pairing everyone is using
Sage or olive green: a botanical, tropical mood
Black and brass: Art Deco chic
Raw natural wood: essential to the Mediterranean look
Dusty pink and blush: a soft contemporary tonal scheme

Which style to go for

Terracotta suits:

Terracotta Berber: a cream ground with terracotta motifs, soft and graphic at once
Faded vintage: a naturally softened palette that fits anywhere
Tribal oriental: geometric motifs in terracotta, cream and black
Terracotta textured plain: the sophisticated minimalist choice, often in viscose for a silky finish

Which room?

Terracotta is genuinely versatile. In a living room, it creates a warm Mediterranean mood on the spot. In a bedroom, it wraps the space in a cocoon, and looks especially good in shaggy. In an entrance hall, it welcomes people warmly. In a dining room, it encourages everyone to linger. It is especially at home in Mediterranean, bohemian and warm Scandinavian interiors, and in "slow decor" schemes.

Terracotta: passing trend or a colour that lasts?

Since 2018-2020, terracotta has become close to timeless. Unlike passing colour fads (millennial pink, for one), it belongs to a deeper movement: the return to natural materials and colours, "slow deco", and the influence of Mediterranean and "wabi-sabi" moods. Its success comes down to a perfect balance: warm enough to feel welcoming, sophisticated enough to avoid dated vintage, universal enough to sit with many styles. Terracotta and grey: a winning pairing?

Absolutely. It is one of the most successful colour pairings in contemporary interiors. Anthracite grey gives a cool, sophisticated base that brings out the warmth of terracotta without letting it take over the room. A few concrete examples:

Anthracite sofa + terracotta rug + cream cushions: a perfect contemporary living room
Light grey walls + terracotta rug + wooden furniture: a warm Scandinavian mood
Grey furniture + a terracotta and cream Berber: graphic and cosy at once

The pairing also works in a bedroom: a terracotta shaggy on a wooden floor with pearl grey walls looks superb.

Bright orange or terracotta: which one?

It depends on the effect you are after and on the size of the rug:

Terracotta / burnt orange / rust: sophisticated, contemporary, easy to live with even in a large size
Bright orange / tango orange: full of energy, better in a small size or as an accent
Copper / golden ochre: luxurious, perfect for Art Deco or a smart interior

If this is your first orange rug, start with terracotta: it is the least risky and works with the widest range of styles. Save bright orange for small sizes used as an accent in an otherwise understated room.
