Our machine-washable rugs

Our machine washable rugs are a genuine revolution in the world of the rug. Built to withstand repeated washes in a domestic machine at 30°C, they combine the beauty of a traditional rug with the practicality of an everyday textile. No more panic over spilt wine, a toddler's flying mashed potato or pet hair worked deep into the pile: one cycle in the machine and the rug is fresh again.

Who are they for?

Washable rugs are aimed above all at:

  • Families with young children: food stains, accidents, sand brought home from the park
  • Pet owners: hair, paw prints, odours
  • High-risk rooms: the kitchen, the bathroom, the hallway
  • Allergy sufferers: a regular wash removes dust mites and allergens
  • Students and young professionals: upkeep could not be simpler

How does it work technically?

Washable rugs are not ordinary rugs that happen to survive a wash. They are engineered from the outset to be laundered:

  • A stable synthetic fibre: polypropylene or polyester, unbothered by water or by gentle detergents
  • Colourfast dyes: they do not bleed in the wash and they do not fade
  • A flat or short-pile construction: it goes into the machine easily
  • A washable non-slip backing: it keeps working after many cycles
  • Well-judged dimensions: many of them fold up to fit a standard machine (7-10 kg)

How to wash it

A simple routine to follow:

  1. Shake the rug or vacuum it before washing, to get rid of loose dust
  2. Fold it concertina-style rather than rolling it, so it fits in the drum
  3. Delicate programme at 30°C, no hotter
  4. A gentle liquid detergent, with no fabric softener, which attacks the non-slip backing
  5. A very gentle spin (400-600 rpm maximum)
  6. Dry it flat on a sheet, never in a tumble dryer, as the heat damages the backing

Frequency and durability

Good quality washable rugs stand up to several dozen washes with no visible deterioration. In normal family use, once a month is enough. In a heavily exposed room, such as a kitchen with young children, a weekly wash is perfectly possible. Overall life expectancy is generally 5 to 10 years, depending on how often you wash it and on your lifestyle.

Styles available

Washable rugs are no longer limited to plain designs: our selection now covers Berbers, graphic moderns, orientals, faded vintage, plain textures. You give up nothing on looks.
