Medium rugs 160-229 cm: living room

Q: 160×230 or 200×300: what difference does it really make?

The difference is 50% more surface area:160×230 cm = 3.7 m², the "front feet of the sofa on the rug" size200×300 cm = 6 m², the "sofa and coffee table entirely on the rug" sizeA 200×300 gives a living room noticeably more presence. If your room is over 18 m², go for the 200×300: a 160×230 risks looking "small".

Bedroom with a queen bed (160 cm): 200×300 cm under the bed, leaving 60 cm free on either side
Dining room for four: 200×290 cm under a 140×90 cm rectangular table

160×230 or 200×300: how to choose

A practical rule, room by room:

160×230 cm: small to mid-sized living rooms, in front of the sofa (front feet on the rug only), bedrooms with a 140 cm bed
200×300 cm: mid-sized to large living rooms, a rug taking in sofa and armchairs, bedrooms with a queen bed sitting on the rug

If in doubt, measure your space and mark it out with masking tape on the floor before you order.

Which size for a bedroom?

It follows the size of your bed:

Bed 140 cm (double): 160×230 cm at the foot of the bed, or 200×300 cm under the bed
Bed 160 cm (queen): 200×300 cm under the bed, ideal
Bed 180 cm (king): move up to a large format, 250×350 cm minimum

The rug should always extend at least 50 cm beyond the bed on each side for the best effect.

Are 200×290 and 200×300 the same thing?

Almost. The two sizes are all but interchangeable in practice (10 cm difference on one side). 200×290 cm is produced by some European mills, while 200×300 cm is the worldwide standard. They look the same in a room and they lay the same way. Simply pick whichever size is available in the style and colour you want: 10 cm will never show.
