Faced with the bath mat aisle, two families compete: thickly woven cotton and velvety polypropylene. Many people decide on looks alone, when the real question is functional. A household where the bathroom is in constant use and one where it sees occasional use should not choose the same material, and it has nothing to do with price. Here are the criteria that matter, and the right choice for your situation.
1. The right question before you buy
Before comparing materials, ask one simple question: how many people use the bathroom each day, and how often? The answer changes the right choice.
A 1-2 person household with moderate use (1 to 2 showers or baths a day, a calm bathroom). Cotton is perfect: a comfortable landing out of the shower, an enveloping feel under bare feet, and time to air-dry between uses.
A household of 3 or more with intensive use (4 to 6 showers or baths a day, a bathroom in constant traffic). Polypropylene suits better: water does not build up, the mat dries between two closely spaced uses, and looking after it is simpler.
A household with young children or older adults. Absolute priority to a built-in non-slip backing. Of the 106 Casemira designs, 100% have a non-slip backing, in cotton as much as polypropylene, which takes that criterion out of the material debate.
To understand the wider bath mat picture beyond the material question, see bathroom rugs: the complete guide. For grip specifically, see non-slip bath mats.
2. Cotton: comfort and absorbency
Cotton is the historic bath mat fibre. It keeps three fundamental qualities.
Deep absorbency. Cotton fibres take water right into the heart of the fabric. A cotton bath towel can hold more than twice its own weight in water. A cotton bath mat works on the same principle: it draws the moisture off your feet as you step out of the shower, rather than pushing it sideways.
Maximum comfort underfoot. Cotton woven into a dense pile, a waffle or a loop gives an enveloping sensation under bare feet. It is the material behind the cocooning bath mats.
Slow air drying. Once soaked, cotton takes several hours to dry out completely. That is the flip side of deep absorbency: if the bathroom is in heavy use and the mat has no time to dry between two uses, moisture settles in and can bring a stubborn smell, or even mould.
Machine washable at 30 °C, delicate cycle, dried flat or hung, subject to the care label on the specific design. See how to machine wash a rug.
Where Casemira stands. 18 bathroom designs are predominantly cotton, generally in a cotton and polyester blend to improve resistance to washing and how they hold up over time. Always in a set of 2 mats (usually 50×80 plus 40×50 cm).
3. Polypropylene: easy care and fast drying
Polypropylene is a synthetic fibre woven into a dense pile for bath mats. Three qualities make it particularly suitable.
Surface hydrophobia. Polypropylene is naturally water-repellent: water stays on the surface rather than soaking into the fibre. The mat dries in a few minutes instead of a few hours.
Comfort while standing. A dense polypropylene pile cushions the pressure on your feet without flattening, which is ideal as you step out of the shower to get dressed or brush your teeth.
Minimal upkeep. A damp sponge lifts limescale marks and shower gel residue. For a more stubborn stain, a 30 °C machine cycle, subject to the specific care label, brings the mat back to new. No fibre that traps smells.
Suitable for underfloor heating most of the time, to be checked on the product page (see materials and underfloor heating).
Where Casemira stands. 88 bathroom designs are predominantly polypropylene (often 84% polypropylene, 12% cotton and 4% other for suppleness), all in a set of 2 mats.
"Cotton wraps your feet up. Polypropylene simply leaves them dry."
4. Compared: 6 key criteria
| Criterion | Cotton | Polypropylene |
|---|---|---|
| Absorbency | Deep, holds the water | Surface only, water sheds |
| Drying | Several hours | A few minutes |
| Comfort under bare feet | Enveloping, cocooning | Cushioning pile |
| Machine washing | 30 °C delicate cycle, per the label | 30 °C delicate cycle, per the label |
| Intensive use (3+ people) | Risk of lingering damp | Well suited |
| Underfloor heating | Varies, check the product page | Usually yes, check the product page |
The Casemira recommendation by profile:
- 1-2 person household, moderate use, comfort first → cotton
- Household of 3 or more, intensive use, easy care first → polypropylene
- Household with underfloor heating → check for "Suitable for underfloor heating" on the product page; the polypropylene designs generally carry it.
5. The Casemira 2-mat set format
A quirk of the Casemira catalogue: every bathroom design is sold as a set of 2 matching mats, never as a single piece. Two set formats:
- Standard set: 50×80 cm plus 40×50 cm, covering 92 designs. The large mat for the shower exit or the basin area, the small one for in front of the toilet or as a basin mat.
- Large set: 60×100 cm plus 50×60 cm, covering 14 designs. For roomier bathrooms, or to cover the shower and bath area more generously.
This coherent set logic (same colours, same motifs, same material) makes the room easier to furnish and gives instant visual harmony. To see how to position the two mats in the set, see the bath mat set, rectangle plus U-shape.

Three Casemira designs for the bathroom
7. FAQ: cotton vs polypropylene
Your questions about bath mat materials
Cotton or polypropylene for a bathroom with children?
It all depends on how intensively the room is used: if the bathroom sees 4 or more uses a day, polypropylene dries between them and is simpler to look after. If use is calmer, cotton brings a cocooning comfort as you step out of the shower. Either way, a built-in non-slip backing is essential: of the 106 Casemira designs, 100% are non-slip.
Can both materials go in the washing machine?
Yes: every Casemira design is machine washable at 30 °C on a delicate cycle, spin at 800 rpm or below, dried flat or hung, subject to the care label on the specific design. Always check the product page before washing. See our guide to machine washing a rug.
Is polypropylene less comfortable than cotton?
No, it is a different kind of comfort. Cotton wraps your feet in a cocooning sensation. Polypropylene, woven into a dense pile, cushions the pressure without flattening and leaves your feet dry. Depending on your preference, one or the other will suit you better. If you are unsure, ordering a 20×30 cm sample at €10 (fully deducted from the price of the set) can help.
Which set size should you choose: standard or large?
The standard set, 50×80 plus 40×50 cm (92 designs), suits most bathrooms. The large set, 60×100 plus 50×60 cm (14 designs), is recommended if the shower and bath area is roomier or if you want broader coverage.
Do Casemira bathroom designs work with underfloor heating?
Most of the polypropylene designs do, to be checked on each product page (look for "Suitable for underfloor heating"). The cotton designs vary more. If in doubt, contact customer service on 02 59 66 01 35, Monday to Saturday from 8am to 8pm, before you order.
What is the returns policy on bath mats?
Free returns within 30 days of delivery. Nothing to pay on your side. The refund follows once the parcel arrives back with us. Full details in our returns policy. Payment in 3 interest-free instalments with Klarna, and free delivery on orders over €100.
