Geometric rugs

The geometric rug is the graphic signature of a contemporary interior. It introduces crisp, rhythmic shapes (diamonds, triangles, chevrons, circles, grids) that energise a space and create a strong visual focal point. Heir to the Bauhaus movement, to Art Deco, to modern minimalism and to Memphis influences, the geometric rug is one of the most versatile in contemporary decorating.

Which room for a geometric rug?

The geometric rug works particularly well in rooms where you want to create a focal point. In a modern living room, it gives character to a neutral sofa. In a dining room, it energises the eating area (choose flatweaves, with no long pile). In an entrance hall, it makes a strong statement from the first step into the house. In a bedroom, go for gentle geometric patterns in light tones so they do not disturb your rest.

Which colours to choose?

Three approaches dominate:

• Strong monochrome: black and white, anthracite and ecru, for maximum graphic impact
• Contrasting neutrals: beige + taupe, grey + black, for discreet sophistication
• Assertive colours: blue + white, terracotta + cream, sage green + black

The rule: the more complex the pattern, the smaller the palette should stay, with two or three colours at most. A busy geometric motif in five colours becomes visually aggressive.

Which furniture?

A geometric rug calls for relatively understated furniture so the eye is not overloaded. It works perfectly with:

• Furniture that is plain, with straight lines (neutral sofas, pale wood tables)
• Walls that are white, or painted in a single colour
• A few restrained accessories: some plain cushions picking up one colour from the rug

What to avoid: pairing a bold geometric rug with patterned curtains and busy wallpaper. Let the rug be the strong piece.

Materials

To keep the motifs crisp, favour high-density polypropylene (the best rendering of clean lines, and hard-wearing), short-pile polyester (for a little more softness), or viscose (a silky finish that lifts the colours, though more delicate). Machine washable designs are available for busy households.
