Modern and designer rugs

The modern designer rug is the signature piece of the contemporary interior. A world away from richly ornamented traditional rugs, it favours visual simplicity, clean lines and carefully judged graphic compositions. It sits perfectly with today's architecture (open-plan layouts, generous volumes, industrial materials, straight-lined furniture) and adds the textile note these spaces so often lack.

The hallmarks of contemporary design

Several visual languages live side by side in the modern rug:

• Clean geometric patterns: circles, triangles, grids, compositions inspired by the Bauhaus movement
• Abstract shapes: gradients, organic blots, painterly compositions
• Subtle textured plains: understated blocks of colour with a woven relief that adds depth
• High-contrast monochrome: black and white, bold two-tone schemes

Which room?

The modern rug works anywhere, though some rooms suit it especially well. The contemporary living room is its natural home: a large 200×300 cm format under the sofa anchors the whole space. In the bedroom, a plain design or a discreet pattern calms things down. In the dining room, a high-contrast geometric pattern lifts the eating area. In an entrance hall, be bold with a small graphic format that sets the tone the moment the door opens.

Colours: understated or bold?

Two broad families dominate. Sophisticated neutrals: beige, taupe, pearl grey, matt black. These suit minimalist interiors and let the furniture and the art speak. Bold contrasts: black-and-white two-tones, deep blue with ecru, terracotta with grey. These create a statement piece, perfect when the furniture stays neutral.

Modern rugs are mainly made from:
