It is particularly well suited to straight staircases and to staircases with one or two landings. Where the stairs curve sharply, fitting needs finer adjustment by a professional, but it remains entirely feasible.

Which styles to choose?

A staircase lends itself well to bold patterns, since nobody lingers there, so you can go further than you would in a living room. Short-pile oriental rugs have a long history on staircases: their density and rich patterning suit the job perfectly and age beautifully. Vintage rugs bring sought-after character to older staircases and period houses. For a contemporary interior, geometric patterns and plain textures in grey or deep beige tones look very elegant.

Material: durability is the criterion

A staircase takes heavy, constant traffic, with a great deal of rubbing on the nosings. The materials to favour:

• Short-pile polypropylene: the safe bet, and it stands up well to friction
• High-density short-pile polypropylene: ultra hard-wearing, ideal for very busy stairs
• Wool (on our handmade designs): noble and very long-lasting, but noticeably more expensive

Best avoided altogether: long pile such as shaggy (it flattens quickly and is dangerous on the way down), pure viscose (too delicate) and very thin rugs with no body.

Safety is non-negotiable

A staircase is a risk point. A few safety rules:

• Solid fixing is essential: stainless steel staples, special stair adhesive or stair rods
• A non-slip backing of good quality
• A visible border: avoid very dark rugs on a poorly lit staircase, where a step is easy to miss
• Regular checks on the fixings (staples, adhesive) every six months

Strategic colours

A staircase is walked on every day, so signs of wear are inevitable. To disguise them:

• Mid to dark tones: anthracite grey, dark taupe brown, burgundy, navy
• Dense patterns: orientals, vintage, geometrics, which naturally hide the marks
• To avoid: white and very pale tones, which will mark immediately
