Choosing a rug for a child's bedroom is not a decorating decision like any other. A small child spends much of the day on the floor with their face close to the rug: crawling, playing, dozing at the foot of the bed, sometimes putting a hand in their mouth. Health considerations come before looks. Here are the four real safety criteria to check before you buy, and the designs that meet them.
1. Why a child's bedroom changes everything
Three things set a child's bedroom apart from every other room in the home.
Prolonged contact with the floor. Where an adult crosses a rug barefoot for a few minutes a day, a baby, a toddler or a child drawing and playing can spend several hours at a time in direct contact with it: head, cheek, hands, mouth. The chemical quality of the fibre becomes a direct health matter.
A developing immune system. Before the age of three, the immune system is more sensitive to irritant or allergenic chemicals. Adult criteria (durability, price, looks) are simply not enough here.
Frequent mess. Food, paint, fruit juice, night-time accidents: a child's bedroom sees every kind of unexpected stain. Washability, or at least a surface that does not hold stains, becomes a central practical criterion.

2. Oeko-Tex Standard 100: what it guarantees
Oeko-Tex Standard 100 certification is the first thing to check on the product page. It is an independent label created in 1992 and awarded by an international network of textile laboratories.
What it tests for.
- The absence of harmful chemical substances listed in the European framework (heavy metals, formaldehyde, pesticides, phthalates, carcinogenic azo dyes and so on)
- Testing on the finished product, not just the raw material
- Annual renewal of the certification (a product certified five years ago no longer counts as certified if the certification has not been renewed)
The 4 Oeko-Tex classes.
- Class 1: products for babies and toddlers (up to age three). The strictest criteria. Nappies, bottles, comforters, baby clothes.
- Class 2: products in direct contact with the skin (clothing, bed linen).
- Class 3: products with no direct skin contact (coats, linings).
- Class 4: furnishing materials (curtains, rugs).
For a rug in a child's bedroom, aim for class 4 as a minimum (the rug standard), and ideally class 2 if the rug is in direct contact with the child's skin (a baby's room where they crawl on the floor).

3. Non-slip and keeping the rug stable
A child who walks, runs, jumps or trips on a rug that slides is at risk of a fall. There are two solutions.
A built-in non-slip backing. The rug comes with a layer of natural latex or a non-slip grain on the reverse. No separate underlay to buy. Of the 25 Casemira children's designs, 4 have a built-in non-slip backing (mostly the washable polyester ones).
A separate non-slip underlay. For designs without a built-in backing (particularly the top-of-the-range wool or viscose pieces), add a non-slip underlay cut 5 cm smaller than the rug in each dimension. That stops the underlay showing at the edges and catching the eye.
To avoid in a child's bedroom. A rug with no non-slip solution at all laid on wood or laminate: the risk of a slip is real, even if the child weighs only 12 kg.

4. Recommended materials
Four materials suit a child's bedroom particularly well.
Heat-Set polypropylene (21 Casemira children's designs). Hypoallergenic, does not harbour dust mites, cleans on the surface, with Oeko-Tex certification across the designs concerned. Recommended for bedrooms with plenty of activity (a child playing, running and drawing on the floor).
Polyester (often in a washable polyester-cotton blend) (4 Casemira children's designs). Soft under hands and face, and machine washable at 30 °C subject to the care label on that particular design. Best avoided for babies and toddlers in particular. Rugs with no Oeko-Tex certification (unverified chemical content) and rugs with a very high pile density (they encourage dust mites to build up if they are not vacuumed regularly).
5. Washability: the practical criterion
Beyond chemical safety, washability is what makes the difference day to day in a child's bedroom.
Machine washing at 30 °C (compatible designs only). Delicate cycle, spin at no more than 800 rpm, dried flat only. No tumble dryer. Always check the care label on that particular design. Of the 25 Casemira children's designs, 4 can go in the machine (mostly the polyester ones).

Regular vacuuming. Once or twice a week to limit the build-up of dust, allergens and mites. Use a soft brush on polyester and wool designs to protect the pile, and a normal brush on polypropylene.
Special cases.
- Sick: act immediately, remove the solids, blot with a damp cloth and clean with soapy water.
- An accident with urine: blot with an absorbent cloth, rinse with cold water, then machine wash if the design allows.
