The small living room is the blind spot of rug guides. Most of them deal with a standard room (20 to 30 m²) and assume the rules scale down, when in fact they invert. In a living room of 10 to 15 m², the rug does not fill the space: it frames it, organises it and opens it up visually. Here is the method for this particular configuration.1. The challenge of a small living room
A living room of 10 to 15 m² (typically a studio, a small one-bedroom flat, or the living space of a compact apartment) combines three constraints.
Everything is visible at once. The whole space is taken in from a single viewpoint as soon as you walk in. Every decorative element registers immediately, with no time to discover it. That makes each visual decision critical: a badly chosen rug flattens the room.
Compact but unavoidable furniture. A two-seater sofa, a coffee table, sometimes an armchair and a side table. There is little room to hide a poor rug: it is inevitably seen in full, or very nearly.
Reduced floor margins. Between the sofa, the coffee table and the walls, the visible floor is measured in tens of centimetres, not metres. Too big a rug removes it; too small a rug leaves it looking incoherent.
For larger rooms (15 to 30 m²), see our guide to living room rugs for 15, 20 and 25 m². For the 160 x 230 size specifically, see the 160 x 230 best seller.
2. The right size: 120 x 170 or 160 x 220
Two sizes dominate small living rooms.
120 x 170 cm (2.04 m² of floor). Recommended for rooms of 10 to 12 m² with a two-seater sofa (160-180 cm long). The rug sits ideally under the coffee table, overhangs by 10-15 cm on each side and leaves a generous margin to the walls and the sofa.
160 x 220 cm (3.52 m² of floor). Recommended for rooms of 13 to 15 m² with a two- or three-seater sofa (180-220 cm long). The rug can take the front legs of the sofa by 5-10 cm, creating the classic unified living room look without spilling into the circulation space.
80 x 150 cm: too small to frame a living room of 10 m² or more, and better kept as an addition (in front of the sofa, or under a standalone armchair). See 80 x 150 rugs: the right uses.
Anything > 200 x 290 cm: to be ruled out in small living rooms; it flattens the space and removes the breathing room on the floor.
| Living room area | Rug size | Typical placement |
|---|---|---|
| 10 to 12 m² | 120 x 170 cm | Under the coffee table, 30-40 cm margins all round |
| 13 to 15 m² | 160 x 220 cm | Front legs of the sofa plus the coffee table |
| > 15 m² | 200 x 290 cm and above | See our guide to rugs for 15/20/25 m² living rooms |
"In a small living room, the rug does not fill the space: it frames it and opens it up visually."
3. 3 placements that open the room up
Placement 1: under the coffee table only. The rug is centred under the coffee table and the sofa stays off it. The effect: the coffee table seems to float on an island of textile, the surrounding floor stays highly visible and the room feels bigger. It is the most versatile placement for 10-12 m².
Placement 2: the front legs of the sofa on the rug. The rug runs under the front legs of the sofa by 5 to 10 cm, and under the whole coffee table. The effect: the classic unified living room, with the room reading as better organised. Recommended for 13-15 m². See the full rule in rugs under the sofa: the 20 cm rule.
Placement 3: offset as a graphic statement. The rug is set at an angle or pushed towards one side of the room, creating an asymmetric visual anchor. The effect: a contemporary design look, and a room with more personality that does not feel any smaller. Recommended if you enjoy staging a scheme, and for open-plan studios.
A rule common to all three. Always leave at least 20 to 30 cm of visible floor between the edge of the rug and the walls or any low furniture (a chest of drawers, a console). That margin creates the visual breathing space that makes the room feel larger.
4. The colours that open a room
A small living room is where the colour of the rug has the greatest visual impact. Three recommendations.
Favour pale tones. Sand beige, ecru, ivory, pearl grey, off-white. These colours reflect the light and make the room feel larger. See versatile beige rugs, minimalist white rugs and Scandinavian rugs and Nordic style.
Discreet motifs to add depth. Fine geometrics, straight lines, chevrons, light diamonds. Motifs that are too dense or too saturated weigh the room down.
Signature colours, used sparingly. Black, anthracite, terracotta, navy and burgundy can work in a small living room, but only if the furniture is very restrained and the rest of the palette stays neutral. For the rules on pairing colours with your sofa, see living room rugs: which colour for which sofa.
To avoid in a small living room. Very dark rugs (black, anthracite) in a large size, which hollow the room out. Multicoloured rugs or dense floral patterns, which saturate it visually.
5. Classic mistakes to avoid
Five mistakes come up again and again in small living rooms.
Choosing a rug that is too small (60 x 100 or 80 x 150). The rug looks lost, disconnected from the sofa, and the room feels smaller still. The minimum size we recommend remains 120 x 170 cm.
Choosing a rug that is too big (200 x 290 or more). The rug touches the furniture, removes every margin of floor and flattens the room. The maximum size we recommend in a small living room remains 160 x 220 cm.
Choosing a very dark rug in a large size. A black, anthracite or dark brown rug in 160 x 220 in a 12 m² room hollows the space out visually and makes the lighting less effective.
Choosing a rug with very dense motifs. Floral, oriental, busy ethnic patterns: these need distance to be read. In a small living room the eye is too close, and the pattern saturates and tires.
Forgetting the circulation. The rug should never encroach on the main route through the room (between the front door and the sofa, between the sofa and the open kitchen). Leave at least 60 cm of clear passage.

7. FAQ: rugs for small living rooms
Your questions about rugs for small living rooms
What size of rug suits a 12 m² living room?
120 x 170 cm is ideal. It sits under the coffee table, overhangs by 10-15 cm on each side and leaves 20-30 cm of visible floor to the walls and the sofa. For a room of 13 to 15 m², 160 x 220 cm lets you include the front legs of the sofa.
Can you put a large rug in a small living room?
No, and it is the most common mistake. A rug of 200 x 290 cm or more in a 12 m² room touches the furniture, removes every margin of floor and flattens the space visually. The maximum size we recommend in a small living room remains 160 x 220 cm.
Which colours open the room up?
Pale tones: sand beige, ecru, ivory, pearl grey, off-white. Pale colours reflect the light and make the room feel larger. Use discreet motifs (fine geometrics, chevrons, light diamonds) to add depth without weighing things down. To avoid: very dark rugs in a large size, and dense floral or oriental patterns.
Under the coffee table only, or under the sofa too?
Three placements are possible: (1) under the coffee table only (the most versatile for 10-12 m²), (2) under the front legs of the sofa plus the coffee table (the classic unified look, 13-15 m²), (3) offset as a graphic statement (a contemporary design effect). See rugs under the sofa: the 20 cm rule.
Can I test the colour in my own small living room first?
Yes, and it is especially useful in a small living room, where the colour of the rug has maximum visual impact. A 20 x 30 cm sample from €10 comes with free delivery, and its cost is deducted from your rug through the code you receive by email. Available on a selection of over 120 designs. See the sample collection.
What should I budget for a Casemira small living room rug?
For a small living room, prices run from polypropylene in 120 x 170 at the accessible end to premium wool or viscose in 160 x 220 at the top. Payment by card or PayPal, free delivery above €100. Free returns within 30 days of delivery. Customer service by email at contact@casemira.com.
