1. Contemporary Berber style, decoded

In its contemporary form, the Berber rug has become one of the great classics of Western interiors since the mid 2010s. You find it in the interiors magazines, in Scandinavian-inspired shops, and in urban and rural homes alike. Its strength lies in a precise, legible visual vocabulary.

Three things define it. A pared-back palette first: mostly ivory, beige, grey and charcoal, sometimes lifted with brown, terracotta or blue. No garish colours, no aggressive juxtapositions. Contemporary Berber plays on nuance, not on maximum contrast. Then geometric motifs: elongated diamonds, zigzags, crosses, broken lines, rhythmic grids. Those motifs are the modern echo of a thousand-year-old tribal language, simplified and redrawn for contemporary rooms. And finally a distinctive texture: contemporary Berber rugs often play with relief, varying pile heights and visible knotted effects that recall the knotted origins of authentic Berbers without claiming that method of making.

Kalista in charcoal and white plays a calculated contrast. A graphic Berber motif on a pale ground with charcoal accents works particularly well in a Scandinavian living room or a minimalist interior. The corded construction gives a distinctive feel and excellent durability. Reversible, antistatic and dust-resistant.

2.2 Kalista Brown & Cream

The warm variant of the Kalista collection, this brown and cream version brings a cosy dimension. Ideal in a main bedroom in ecru tones, in a living room with caramel leather furniture, or in a country-chic dining room. It shares the technical qualities of the charcoal Kalista: reversible, antistatic and easy to look after.

2.3 Calvino No. 04 Cream

The deepest-relief design in the collection. With its 30 mm pile, the Calvino No. 04 sets an ethnic Berber motif in relief on a natural cream ground. The feel is warm, almost shaggy, but structured by the pattern. It suits rooms where you want comfort underfoot: bedrooms, lounges, reading corners. More generous than a flat Berber, it dresses the volume of a room.

2.4 Fidelia Grey and Cream

Composition: 100% BCF polypropylene • Made in: Poland • Density: 1400 g/m² • Pile height: approx. 9 mm • Sizes: 60x100, 80x150, 120x170, 160x220, 200x290 cm

The flattest and most contemporary version. The Fidelia in grey and cream takes a pared-back Berber motif at low pile height, which suits busy rooms and confidently designed interiors. BCF polypropylene fibre resists fading, distortion and abrasion. A 60x100 size is also available, ideal for a hallway or a reading corner.

2.5 Torino Beige and Grey

The most complete size range in the Berber selection. From 60x100 (hallway) up to 300x400 (a very large living room), the Torino in beige and grey carries a subtle Berber weave across every scale. Compatible with underfloor heating and robot vacuums (where stated on the product page). A density of 1900 g/m² gives it real substance.

2.6 Vertigo Multicoloured, the washable one

Composition: 60% cotton and 40% polyester • Density: 1600 g/m² • Pile height: approx. 6 mm • Sizes: 80x150, 120x180, 160x230 cm • Machine washable at 30 °C • Built-in non-slip backing

The only machine washable Berber in the collection. Vertigo Multicoloured takes the Berber codes (diamond motifs, graphic contrast) into a cotton-polyester blend built for families with children or pets. Delicate cycle, non-slip backing. 3. How to work a contemporary Berber into a room

A Berber style rug is a decorative chameleon. It works in worlds that look like opposites. Here are the four settings where it works best.

Scandinavian. Pale floors, blond wood furniture, ecru linen textiles, green plants: an ivory or cream Berber (Calvino, Kalista brown and cream) adds the texture this minimal style so often lacks. The Berber motif breaks up Scandinavian rigour without betraying it.

Japandi. A crossover between Japanese and Scandinavian, japandi is built on restraint and natural materials. A Fidelia in grey and cream, flat and discreet, sits perfectly with a low sofa, a dark wooden coffee table and matt ceramics.

Modern boho chic. This is where contemporary Berber is most at home. Alongside colourful textiles, patterned cushions, a corduroy velvet sofa and rattan pendant lights, it provides the centrepiece that gives the living room its structure. Vertigo Multicoloured or Kalista charcoal are the obvious choices here.

Contemporary minimalism. To avoid feeling austere, a minimalist flat needs a point of warmth. A Berber like the Torino in beige or the Fidelia in grey provides exactly that without diluting the rigour of everything else.

4. Which size to choose

The right size depends on the room and the furniture. Here are the pairings that work for a Berber style.

5. Caring for a Berber style rug

Care depends on the material. For the five 100% polypropylene designs (Kalista, Calvino, Fidelia, Torino), day-to-day care is simple.

Vacuum regularly: once or twice a week in the direction of the pile, without an electric brush bar on the Calvino No. 04 (whose 30 mm pile can tangle). For the Fidelia (flat pile) and the Torino (heat-set), an ordinary vacuum works with no special precautions.

Local stains: blot immediately with kitchen paper. If the mark resists, use lukewarm water with a drop of mild soap or washing-up liquid, dab from the edge towards the centre, rinse with clean water and let it air dry. Never rub, and never use abrasive products or bleach.

Deep cleaning: professional dry cleaning once a year for main living spaces. In bedrooms and home offices, once every two years is enough.

For the Vertigo Multicoloured (a cotton-polyester blend), the big advantage is machine washing: delicate cycle at 30 °C, mild detergent, a light 400 rpm spin, dried flat. The non-slip backing stands up to regular washing.
