The entrance to a home is not a room like any other. It is an airlock, a threshold, a place of transition where you take your shoes off, put your bags down and welcome guests. A rug plays three roles there at once: it filters what comes in, it protects the floor inside from splashes, and it welcomes people into the house. Here is how Casemira has structured its dedicated collection, and why the no-outdoor-doormat position is deliberate.

1. The entrance: a buffer between outside and in

Three functions shape the role of an indoor entrance rug:

Filtering. The rug stops the dust, particles and fine dirt carried in on the soles of shoes from the street.

Protecting the floor. Wet entrance tiles, wooden floors damaged by heels, stained lino: the entrance takes more punishment than almost any other floor. An 80 x 150 rug absorbs the knocks and the splashes.

A visual welcome. As the first point of contact with the home, the entrance sets the tone for the whole scheme.

For the wider picture of movement from outside to in (corridor, stairs, entrance), see our guide to runner and hallway rugs.

2. Casemira does not sell outdoor doormats

A position we own: Casemira does not sell doormats laid outside the front door. The entrance collection focuses exclusively on the indoor entrance rug, in other words the rug placed just inside the home, past the threshold.

Why that choice?

The classic outdoor doormat (coir, plant fibre, ribbed rubber) answers a specific need: scraping your soles before you come in. It is a utilitarian product with technical demands very different from those of a decorative textile rug (total UV resistance, water drainage, a stiff scraping fibre).

Casemira chose to concentrate on the decorative, functional textile rug, which brings warmth, design and acoustic comfort to indoor spaces. An outdoor doormat remains a complementary product you can buy separately at any DIY store if you need one.

The recommended combination: a scraping doormat outside (bought elsewhere) plus a Casemira indoor entrance rug (typically 80 x 150 cm) laid just past the threshold. That double zone captures 90% of the dirt before it reaches the rest of the house.

For outdoors more generally (terrace, balcony, pergola), see the dedicated outdoor rug collection, which offers more than 20 designs in 100% Oeko-Tex polypropylene. See also outdoor polypropylene rugs.

"An indoor entrance rug is not a doormat. It is the first impression."

3. More than 70 indoor entrance designs

The Casemira entrance rug collection holds more than 70 dedicated designs, structured like this:

Feature Detail
Designs in total More than 70
Price range Small budget
Materials Polyester (more than 50), polypropylene (some designs), cotton (a few designs)
Shapes Rectangle (more than 70), oval (a few designs)
Non-slip More than 50 designs with a non-slip backing
Machine washable More than 50 designs machine washable at 30°C

It is one of the most affordable collections in the Casemira catalogue, which makes it an excellent way to discover the brand, or to furnish a studio or a modest flat.

The main aesthetic styles:

  • Plains and understated geometrics for a restrained contemporary mood
  • Faded vintage motifs for a welcoming entrance
  • Contemporary oriental motifs for a Haussmann apartment entrance
  • Boho ethnic motifs for a Mediterranean or Moroccan entrance

4. Sizes: 80 x 150, oval, runner

The sizes in the entrance collection are calibrated for typical layouts:

80 x 150 cm. The pivot size for most entrances (1.5 to 3 m²). Laid just past the threshold, it takes both feet standing, captures the dirt and marks out the space.

60 x 100 cm. A compact size for small entrances (under 1.5 m²), studios and city flats. Squarer, covering just the area of the first few steps.

40 x 60 cm. The small extra size for a very small entrance or in front of a back door.

Oval (a few designs). To soften an entrance with very geometric lines (angular tiling, bold furniture). An island effect that structures the space differently.

An 80 x 150 laid lengthways for corridor-shaped entrances that are long and narrow. For genuinely long corridors over 4 m, see the dedicated made-to-measure runner collection.

For the detail of sizes by layout, see our guide to choosing the right rug size.

5. Materials: polyester dominates

Of the more than 70 designs, more than 50 are polyester, some are polypropylene and a few are mainly cotton. Why that split?

Polyester (more than 50 designs, the majority). Polyester combines an attractive look (vintage motifs, soft colours), sound durability under repeated footfall and machine washing at 30°C on most designs. It is the ideal balance for a forgiving entrance.

Polypropylene (some of the designs). Stiffer and more resistant to heavy abrasion. Ideal for very busy entrances (large families, homes with pets). Naturally resistant to soiling thanks to its non-porous fibre.

Cotton (a few designs). Very soft to the touch, with a natural boho feel. More absorbent (useful for taking the damp off slightly wet shoes), and it calls for more frequent washing.

No wool, viscose or Tencel designs in the entrance collection. Those premium fibres are reserved for the central living spaces, where skin contact and the feel under bare feet come first.

To compare materials, see choosing the right rug material.

6. Non-slip is essential (more than 50 designs)

Grip matters even more in the entrance than in other rooms: you often arrive there with wet shoes, tiled floors turn slippery, and the rug absolutely has to stay put.

More than 50 Casemira designs (nearly three in four) have a built-in latex non-slip backing.

Test it on delivery. Lay the rug on its final floor and walk on it with wet feet. The rug should stay in place. If you feel it slipping, you have two options:

  1. Add a universal non-slip underlay to reinforce the grip on a very smooth floor.
  2. Choose a Casemira design that is explicitly non-slip (more than 50 in the collection).

Machine washable. The non-slip designs are also machine washable at 30°C. Particularly useful in an entrance: a wash every 2 months is enough.

For full care advice, see our guide to how to clean a rug.

Recommended combinations:

  • A family entrance with pets: an 80 x 150 polypropylene design (with a non-slip underlay)
  • An elegant, classic entrance: a vintage polyester 80 x 150 or an oval
  • A compact studio: a non-slip 60 x 100 polyester design
  • A long corridor entrance: see made-to-measure runner rugs (more than 50 dedicated polypropylene designs)

Casemira guarantees on entrance rugs: free delivery on orders over €100 (€9.99 below that), dispatch within 24 to 48 working hours and free returns within 30 days on 100% of the catalogue.
