1. The rule of undertones
Before the specific recommendations, one rule applies to all four cases. Never repeat the exact colour of the sofa on the rug.
A cream sofa plus a cream rug does not create a soft effect: it creates a flat one, where the eye can no longer read the volumes. To bring depth, the rug has to play either a contrast of lightness (a pale sofa with a darker rug, or the other way round) or a contrast of undertone (a cool white sofa with a warm ecru rug).
The undertone is the quiet shade that colours a neutral. A beige can be warm (an orange undertone), cool (a grey undertone) or neutral (a brown undertone). 2. White or cream sofa: which rug
A white or cream sofa is a pale ground, almost always cool (a grey or blue undertone) or warm (a beige undertone). It calls for a rug that anchors the room through contrast.
Recommended colours:
- Sand beige or mid taupe: softness, a warm harmony, nothing jarring

3. Beige sofa: which rug
The beige sofa is the most common in France. It gives a rug plenty of latitude, but it demands particular attention to undertone.
If the beige sofa is cool (a grey undertone):
- Pearl grey or anthracite rug: it extends the cool palette
