A Scandinavian rug is not a folk object, nor a souvenir of a trip to Stockholm. It is a precise visual grammar, codified in the 1950s by Nordic designers and picked up today right across Europe. The rugs that belong to it follow simple but strict rules: a pale palette, restrained motifs, soft materials, decisive shapes. Here is how to recognise a genuine Scandinavian-style rug, and how to make it work at home.
1. Scandinavian is a style, not a folklore
An important clarification first: the Scandinavian style we talk about in interiors is an aesthetic movement, not a place of manufacture. It was defined by the Swedish, Danish and Finnish design schools in the middle of the twentieth century, around five principles: function, simplicity, light, natural materials and ornamental restraint.
A Nordic-inspired rug can therefore be woven anywhere in the world as long as it respects those codes. At Casemira, the Scandinavian-style designs are produced according to European textile industry standards, in contemporary materials (New Zealand wool, viscose, recycled polyester, cotton), with modern finishes.
What sets this style apart from the rest: it never tries to draw attention to itself. A Scandinavian rug is a ground, not a subject. It sets the room, brightens it, lightens it. It tells no story and does not decorate: it organises.
To see where the rug fits in a broader decorative grammar, see our guide to choosing a living room rug.
2. The visual codes of Nordic style
Four visual markers identify a Scandinavian-inspired rug.
The pale palette. Light neutrals dominate: beige, ecru, ivory, off-white, pearl grey, mouse grey. Black and charcoal can appear as graphic punctuation but never as the ground. Bright colours (terracotta, green, blue) are possible as very occasional accents (one or two graphic lines).
Discreet geometric motifs. Straight lines, chevrons, triangles, very pared-back diamonds, fine stripes. The motifs are always secondary: they never cover more than 30% of the surface. For the range of beiges, see our guide to versatile beige rugs.
Decisive shapes. Classic rectangles (160 x 230, 200 x 300), pure circles (Ø160, Ø200). No cut-outs, no elaborate borders, no baroque fringing. The outline is clean.
Tactile softness. Scandinavian design owns its materials. A Nordic rug is not a purely visual object: it is meant to be felt under bare feet. Hence the preference for wool, viscose and silky polyester.
| Visual code | Part of the style | To avoid |
|---|---|---|
| Palette | Beige, ecru, grey, white | Saturated colours as the ground |
| Motifs | Fine geometrics, < 30% of the surface | Floral, medallion, oriental |
| Shape | Rectangle, pure circle | Cut-outs, heavy fringing |
| Border | Restrained or absent | Ornate borders, friezes |
3. The materials it favours
Scandinavian style relies on four main materials, each with a precise aesthetic role.
Wool. The Nordic material par excellence. For pieces that anchor a living room or bedroom, wool brings visual warmth, thermal insulation and durability documented by the composition according to textile industry standards. Casemira offers over 100 Scandinavian-style designs in wool (pure or blended with viscose or cotton). To go further with this fibre, see New Zealand wool rugs and 100% wool rugs versus 80/20 blends.
Viscose. For a subtle sheen and a fluid handle. Viscose gives Scandinavian style its luminous, almost satin quality, catching natural light without glaring. Casemira has over 10 viscose designs. See silky viscose rugs.
Polyester (often blended with cotton). For washable designs and accessible budgets. Scandinavian polyester is woven into a dense, soft pile with an elegant matt finish. Casemira has a few polyester designs, often in a recycled polyester and cotton blend, machine washable at 30°C subject to the care label on that particular design.
Cotton. For designs with a cotton backing under a viscose or wool face, and for light, washable flatweaves. A few Casemira designs combine cotton with wool or polyester.
To understand the differences between all these fibres and choose according to how you live, see our guide to which rug material to choose.

4. Living room, bedroom, study: where to use it
Scandinavian style settles into three main rooms, each with its own logic.
In the living room. The reference sizes are 160 x 230 or 200 x 300 cm depending on the area (15-20 m² calls for 160 x 230, 20-30 m² for 200 x 300). The classic placement: the front legs of the sofa rest on the rug, creating the visual unity. The pale palette works particularly well on light wood floors (oak, ash, birch) and pale grey tiles. For precise sizing, see living room rugs for 15, 20 and 25 m² and rugs under the sofa: the 20 cm rule.
In the bedroom. A Scandinavian rug works either as a single piece at the foot of the bed (a 200 x 300 laid across, with the bed on the upper third) or as two side runners (80 x 150 on each side). The preferred material: wool or viscose, for softness underfoot first thing in the morning. See 3 ways to place a rug under the bed.
In a study or reading corner. A compact size (120 x 170 or 160 x 230), usually under a reading chair or a pale wood desk. Scandinavian style calms a working area without distracting the eye.
For an entrance hall or corridor, it is better to choose colours that forgive marks (dark grey, charcoal) rather than the whites and ecrus of pure Scandinavian style. See hallway and entrance rugs.

7. FAQ: Scandinavian rugs
Your questions about Scandinavian rugs
Are Scandinavian rugs actually made in Scandinavia?
The "Scandinavian" we talk about in interiors is an aesthetic style codified by Nordic designers, not a place of manufacture. A Scandinavian-inspired rug can be made anywhere in the world as long as it respects the visual codes of the style (pale palette, discreet geometric motifs, soft materials). Casemira sources its Nordic-inspired designs from specialist suppliers.
What is the difference between Scandinavian and minimalist?
Minimalism strips everything back: a monochrome palette (often white or grey alone), no motifs, very geometric shapes. Scandinavian style keeps a textile presence (wool, viscose), accepts fine geometric motifs and plays on warm neutrals (beige, ecru). Minimalism is cool and radical; Scandinavian style is warmer and more lived-in.
Which material should I choose for a living room?
For the living room, wool (or a wool and viscose blend) remains the reference: thermal insulation according to textile industry standards, longevity and an elegant matt finish. Casemira offers over 100 wool designs in Scandinavian style. For a more accessible budget or a household with small children, polyester (often blended with cotton) is washable at 30°C subject to the care label on that particular design.
Are there machine washable Scandinavian rugs?
Yes: a few Casemira Scandinavian designs are machine washable at 30°C (the polyester or polyester-cotton pieces). Always check the care label on that particular design before washing. See our guide to washing a rug in the machine. Pure wool designs must never go in the machine.
Can I feel the material before buying?
Yes: over 10 Casemira Scandinavian designs (some of the handmade pieces and the washable Easy Clean ones) are eligible for 20 x 30 cm samples from €10 (free delivery), with the cost deducted from the price of the rug through the code you receive by email. See the sample collection.
What does a good Scandinavian rug cost?
At Casemira the Scandinavian-style collection sits in the mid-range to higher budget bracket: it starts with wool or polyester designs in 160 x 230 and tops out with high-density New Zealand wool in 200 x 300. Payment by card or PayPal, free delivery on orders of €100 or more. For tailored advice, you can reach customer service by email at contact@casemira.com.
