In front of the sink, a rug is not there for decoration. Its job is precise and practical: cushioning long spells on your feet, soaking up splashes, drying quickly and staying put when you dry your hands. But that particular patch of floor differs from kitchen to kitchen, and the wrong size or the wrong material turns a comfort into a nuisance. Here is how to size and choose a rug made specifically for this zone.

1. In front of the sink: a zone of its own

The area in front of a kitchen sink concentrates three demands that few other rugs in the home face at the same time.

Frequent splashes. Water from the tap, dishes draining, pans being emptied, vegetables being washed: this zone constantly takes free water or a fine spray. An unsuitable rug holds the damp, grows mould and eventually gives off a stubborn smell.

Long spells standing. Preparing a meal, washing up, peeling vegetables: you can spend 15 to 45 minutes rooted to this spot. A hard tiled floor tires the feet and the lower back quickly. The rug acts as a cushion.

Marks and traffic. You move from the sink to the hob, come back with wet hands, sometimes carry food across. Shoe soles leave marks, bits of food drop. The rug has to be forgiving.

For a wider view of kitchen rugs beyond the sink area alone, see our guide to kitchen rugs: material and care. For food-stain resistance specifically, see stain-resistant kitchen rugs.

2. The right size: 60 x 100, 80 x 150 or a runner

The right size depends on how the kitchen is laid out.

A single sink (60 to 80 cm wide) in a run or a corner: 60 x 100 cm. This is the basic size, meant to cover exactly the standing zone in front of the bowl without spilling into neighbouring areas. Casemira offers over 50 designs in 60 x 100 cm in the kitchen collection. The advantages: easy to wash, inexpensive, simple to handle.

A double sink or an island sink (80 to 100 cm wide): 80 x 150 cm. It covers the bowl and reaches slightly into the draining area. This is the versatile size, and the one to choose when in doubt. Casemira offers over 50 designs in 80 x 150 cm. See also our guide to 80 x 150 rugs: 5 perfect uses.

A longer run of kitchen units: a made-to-measure runner 80 cm wide. If the sink extends into the cooking zone or a long run of units (more than 1.80 m), a made-to-measure runner (80 cm wide, with a made-to-measure length from 0.50 to 10 m; allow 1.50 to 3 m for such a run) covers the whole working area. Casemira offers over 30 kitchen references as made-to-measure runners 80 cm wide, in lengths from 0.50 to 10 m. To understand the difference between a kitchen runner and a hallway runner, see our guide to runners for narrow hallways.

Kitchen layout Recommended size Casemira designs
Single sink, compact kitchen 60 x 100 cm Over 50 designs
Wide or double sink 80 x 150 cm Over 50 designs
Long run of units or island Made-to-measure 80 cm runner Over 30 references

The margin rule: leave 5 to 10 cm of tiling visible between the base units and the rug. That makes the edges easier to clean and stops the rug catching under cupboard doors.

3. The material: polyester-cotton or polypropylene

Two families of material dominate the kitchen sink zone at Casemira.

Washable polyester-cotton (over 50 designs). The composition: polyester and cotton blended, or polyester alone. The advantages: soft under bare feet, absorbs splashes and is machine washable at 30°C subject to the care label on that particular design. The drawback: it dries more slowly than pure polypropylene.

Polypropylene (over 30 designs). A synthetic fibre woven into a dense pile, water-repellent (water beads on the surface rather than soaking in) and very quick to dry. The advantages: the floor stays dry and a damp sponge is all the cleaning it needs. The drawback: it feels less plush under bare feet than polyester-cotton, though the dense pile still makes standing comfortable enough. See polypropylene rugs: yes it is plastic, but to understand this fibre better.

What to avoid in front of a kitchen sink. Highly absorbent fibres that hold water (wool, viscose, thick pure cotton) and silky fibres that mark quickly (dense viscose, silk). And more generally, any rug without a built-in non-slip backing.

Material Behaviour with water Machine washable Who it suits
Polyester-cotton (washable) Absorbs, dries in a few hours Yes, 30°C per the label Households with children, a cosy feel
Polypropylene Repels water, dries very fast Wipe the surface with a damp sponge Heavily used kitchens, easy upkeep

To understand the other materials in the catalogue (wool, viscose, Tencel), see which rug material to choose.

"In front of a sink, the best rug is not the prettiest one. It is the one that dries fastest."

4. Non-slip: not negotiable

In front of the sink, a rug gets wet regularly. On tiles, vinyl or laminate, a rug with no non-slip backing slides, sometimes sharply.

Casemira offers over 50 kitchen designs with a built-in non-slip backing (out of more than 80 in the collection), nearly two thirds of the kitchen catalogue. The backing is usually natural latex or a woven non-slip grain, and it works on tiles, varnished wood, vinyl and laminate.

If the design you want has no built-in non-slip backing, there are two options:

  • Add a non-slip underlay (bought separately, cut 5 cm smaller than the rug in each dimension)
  • Choose another design with a built-in backing (our recommendation for the kitchen)

Absolutely to be avoided: a rug with no backing laid straight onto wet tiles. The risk of a fall is real, particularly for older people and small children.

5. Everyday care

A rug in front of the sink needs attention more often than any other in the home, but it is also simpler to look after, provided the material is right.

Weekly vacuuming. Use a soft brush on polyester-cotton designs (to protect the pile) and a normal brush on polypropylene (which takes more vigorous vacuuming).

An occasional machine wash (washable designs only). 30°C, delicate cycle, a gentle spin (never a fast spin), dry flat. Always check the care label on that particular design. See the full procedure in how to wash a rug in the machine.

A fresh stain. Blot immediately with a dry cloth (do not rub), then blot with a little warm soapy water (mild soap), rinse with a damp cloth and let it air dry. For the detail of the techniques by type of stain, see how to clean your rug.

A soaked rug after an overflow. Hang it flat or over an airer in a well-ventilated room for 12 to 24 hours. Never put it back down damp (risk of mould).

The classic mistake. Trying to remove every mark the moment it appears: repeated dry rubbing wears the pile out prematurely. Far better to treat fresh stains immediately than to attack a dried one with plenty of water.

7. FAQ: rugs in front of the sink

Your questions about rugs in front of the sink

What size suits the exact area in front of the sink?

60 x 100 cm for a single sink in a compact kitchen (over 50 Casemira designs). 80 x 150 cm for a wide sink, a double bowl or an island (over 50 designs). A made-to-measure runner 80 cm wide to cover a continuous run from sink to hob (over 30 references, lengths from 0.50 to 10 m).

Polyester or polypropylene: which should I choose?

Polyester-cotton is soft under bare feet and washable at 30°C subject to the label (recommended for households with children). Polypropylene is water-repellent: water beads on the surface rather than soaking in, the rug dries very fast and a damp sponge is all it needs (recommended for heavily used kitchens). Casemira offers over 50 polyester-cotton designs and over 30 in polypropylene.

The rug in front of the sink keeps slipping, what should I do?

Start with a design that has a built-in non-slip backing: Casemira offers over 50 of them out of more than 80 kitchen designs. If the one you want does not have it, add a non-slip underlay cut 5 cm smaller than the rug in each dimension. Never lay a rug without a non-slip backing on tiles that get wet regularly: the risk of a fall is real.

How often should I wash a rug in front of the sink?

Vacuum weekly with a soft brush. Machine wash occasionally (every 2 to 3 months depending on use) for compatible designs, at 30°C on a delicate cycle with a gentle spin (never a fast spin), then dried flat. Always check the care label on that particular design. See our guide to washing a rug in the machine.

Can I feel the material before buying?

Not for the designs in the kitchen collection, which do not come with a sample: free returns within 30 days give you time to judge the rug in place. 20 x 30 cm samples (from €10, free delivery, with the cost deducted from your rug through the code you receive by email) cover a selection of over 120 designs (some of the handmade rugs, the Easy Clean range and a few outdoor rugs).
