The Easy Clean rug answers a classic dilemma: you want a rug that brings warmth and comfort to a room, but you dread the stains, the spills, the wet paws and the claw marks. For years those two demands looked contradictory: either a rug that took daily life in its stride but looked basic, or a refined rug you had to protect like a work of art. The Easy Clean tag changes that equation.

1. Easy Clean: the exact definition

Contrary to what people assume, Easy Clean is not an industry certification or a third-party label. It is a Casemira commercial descriptor for the combination of four technical characteristics on a single rug:

  1. Machine washable at 30 °C on a delicate cycle. The fibre and the construction cope with water, the movement of the drum and flat drying.
  2. Water-repellent and stain-resistant thanks to a hydrophobic coating. Liquids bead on the surface instead of soaking into the fibre, giving you several minutes to act.
  3. Non-slip thanks to a secured latex backing. The rug does not slide on hard floors, and no additional underlay is needed in most cases.
  4. Scratch-resistant thanks to weave density and fibre choice. Particularly useful where there are pets.

On top of those four properties comes Oeko-Tex Standard 100 certification as standard, guaranteeing the absence of harmful substances in the fibre and the dyes. All 57 Casemira Easy Clean designs are Oeko-Tex certified.

On the product page, those four properties appear as four distinct badges in the specifications area. There is no single "Easy Clean badge" on the product card: Easy Clean is the tag that groups those four specific badges together.

2. How the water-repellent treatment works

At the heart of the Easy Clean promise is a hydrophobic coating applied to the fibre. In practice, every strand of the rug is treated to push liquid away at the surface rather than let it seep down between the fibres. A spilled drop of wine turns into a bead: it stays on top, mobile, ready to be lifted with a single wipe of a clean cloth.

That turns the usual race against time (three seconds to act before the stain sinks in) into an unhurried job with several minutes to react. In a household with children or pets, that is a real change to daily life.

There is a mechanical benefit too: the coating reduces how well dry particles cling on (dust, hair, crumbs). The weekly vacuum is more effective, and the rug holds its brightness for longer.

One limit to know about: the water-repellent treatment does not last forever. Under very heavy use (permanent traffic routes, monthly washes), the effect can fade after 18 to 24 months by textile industry standards. The rug is still washable, but the beading effect becomes less spectacular. See section 6 for how long to expect it to last with your own use.

3. Easy Clean vs plain washable vs outdoor water-resistant

Three families not to be confused:

Family Machine washable Stain-resistant Non-slip Scratch-resistant Use
Easy Clean Yes (30°C) Yes Yes Yes Living rooms, bedrooms, offices, living spaces
Plain washable Yes (30°C) Varies Varies Varies Living rooms, bedrooms, general purpose
Outdoor water-resistant Design dependent Yes Varies Varies Terraces, balconies, conservatories

The takeaway:

Easy Clean is built for indoors, in everyday living spaces. It combines all four properties in one product, and that is what sets it apart from a plain washable, which may only have one or two of the four.

Plain washable is the baseline: it goes in the machine at 30 °C, but may be neither water-repellent nor non-slip depending on the design. The 350 Casemira washable designs that are not Easy Clean are built for less exposed settings (main bedrooms, offices, spare rooms).

Outdoor water-resistant is a family of its own, dedicated to UV resistance and prolonged damp. See our outdoor rug guide for terraces, balconies and pergolas.

"An Easy Clean rug is the freedom to lay down something beautiful without giving up on everyday life."

4. The 57 Casemira Easy Clean designs

The Easy Clean selection sits within the washable collection (407 designs in total). Every Easy Clean design shares a common technical construction: a cotton and polyester blend certified to Oeko-Tex Standard 100, a non-slip latex backing, and hydrophobic and scratch-resistant surface treatments.

Price range: €239 to €549, with a median of €349 depending on size and design.

Shapes available: 55 rectangles and 2 rounds, from 80×150 cm (hallways, children's rooms, in front of a two-seater sofa) to 200×300 cm (a standard living room) and up to 250×350 cm for larger spaces.

The main aesthetic families:

  • Faded vintage: the Vision, Eden and Isadora designs, which take the codes of worn, patinated rugs into a contemporary, washable version. Muted neutral colours (grey, beige, faded midnight blue) that fit any scheme.
  • Contemporary geometric: Laiton and Terrazzo, with structured graphic motifs, perfect for a loft, a studio flat or a mid-century modern living room.
  • Updated Berber: motifs drawn from traditional North African rugs, read in a contemporary and accessible way.

For the handmade designs that are not Easy Clean (fine pieces with their own care requirements), see the handmade rug collection.

To test before you buy, 127 designs in the Casemira range (handmade and Easy Clean included) are available as samples at €10, 20×30 cm, deducted in full when you buy the rug, with no limit per household.

5. In use: families, pets, meals in front of the TV

Three typical profiles for whom Easy Clean makes a real difference:

A family with young children. Snacks on the floor, spilled bottles, paint, modelling clay, accidental marks. The water-repellent finish gives you time to act, and machine washing brings the rug back to new every few months. The rug becomes a genuine play area, without the constant tension of "don't spill anything". Our children's bedroom rug guide goes deeper.

A household with pets. Wet paws in rainy weather, hair, the occasional accident, cat claws. Scratch resistance protects the fibre, the water-repellent finish makes organic liquids easier to clean up, and machine washing resets the rug both visually and by smell. For medium to large dogs, allow for a size that suits the sleeping area if relevant.

A living room where meals happen in front of the TV. Pizza, coffee, red wine, crumbs. Easy Clean absorbs the unexpected without drama. This is where the return on investment is felt immediately: one well-handled spill pays back the price difference against an untreated plain washable.

A bonus setting: in a kitchen or dining room, Easy Clean is an excellent alternative to a vinyl mat (which Casemira does not sell). The textile fibre brings warmth and acoustic comfort, while the treatment handles most food-related mishaps. See our kitchen rug guide.

If you are hesitating, buying a rug online without getting it wrong is also backed by Casemira's free returns within 30 days and by Klarna in 3 interest-free instalments.

6. Daily care and how long the treatment lasts

The recommended routine:

  • Vacuum weekly in the direction of the pile, on moderate power
  • Act immediately on fresh spills: blot without rubbing, using a clean white cloth, and let the water-repellent finish do the rest
  • Machine wash every 2 to 3 months in normal use, monthly in heavily exposed households (pets, young children)
  • Turn it 180° every 6 months to even out the wear

How long the water-repellent treatment lasts:

By textile industry standards for this kind of hydrophobic coating on a cotton-polyester fibre, the beading effect keeps its full efficiency for 18 to 24 months in normal use, and longer in light use. Beyond that the rug remains washable and functional, but the repellency gradually fades.

How long the fibre lasts:

The cotton and polyester construction with a latex backing is built for 5 to 8 years in normal use, and longer if you keep up the rotation and preventive care. That is the typical lifespan of a Casemira living room rug by textile industry standards. For a full guide to the quality criteria, see spotting a quality rug.

Reviving the water repellency:

After 24 months, you can apply a fresh textile waterproofing spray from a DIY store or hardware shop. The effect is not the equal of the original industrial treatment, but it restores part of the hydrophobic property for several more months.

7. FAQ: Easy Clean rugs

Your questions about Easy Clean rugs

Is Easy Clean an official certification?

No. Easy Clean is a Casemira commercial descriptor for the combination of 4 technical treatments together (machine washable, water-repellent and stain-resistant, non-slip, scratch-resistant), all present on the same rug at once. Each treatment is validated individually, and the whole is certified to Oeko-Tex Standard 100.

Are all Casemira washable rugs Easy Clean?

No. Of the 407 designs in the washable collection, 57 carry the Easy Clean tag. The others are washable (machine at 30°C) but may not combine all 4 treatments (washable plus non-slip, for instance, without the repellent or scratch resistance).

How long does the water repellency last?

The full repellent effect lasts 18 to 24 months in normal use by textile industry standards, and longer in light use. Beyond that the rug remains washable and functional, but the beading effect gradually fades. It can be revived with a textile waterproofing spray.

Is Easy Clean suitable for households with pets?

Yes, and it is one of the primary use cases. Scratch resistance protects the fibre from cats, the water-repellent finish makes urine or wet paws easier to clean up, and machine washing brings the rug fully back to new. For very large dog breeds in a sleeping area, allow for a suitable size.

What size Easy Clean rug should I choose for a living room?

The standard sizing rules apply: 160×230 for 15 m², 200×300 for 20 m², 250×350 or 300×400 for 25 m² and above. See our guide to choosing a size and the 20 cm rule under the sofa.

Can I try an Easy Clean rug before buying it?

Yes. Some of the 57 Easy Clean designs are among the 127 references eligible for samples at €10 (20×30 cm), deducted in full from the price of the rug, with no limit per household. Every Casemira rug is also covered by free returns within 30 days.
