An easy-care rug is not a cheap rug. It is a rug designed to stay clean, dry and good-looking with no effort, in the rooms where mess is inevitable: the kitchen and the bathroom. Buying well comes down to five precise technical criteria, worth knowing before you click. Here is the method.
1. "Easy-care": the real definition
The phrase "easy-care" gets used for anything and everything in retail. For it to mean something technically, it has to cover a combination of properties.
A genuinely easy-care rug is:
- A rug that does not hold dirt (a water-repellent surface or a dense, stain-resistant pile)
- A rug that cleans with no special effort (a damp sponge, a 30 °C machine wash, drying flat)
- A rug that dries quickly after cleaning or a splash
- A rug that stays put (a built-in non-slip backing)
- A rug that will not release chemical substances into the air (Oeko-Tex certification)

2. 5 key criteria, all together
Criterion 1: machine washable at 30 °C (subject to the care label on that particular design). This is the central criterion in the kitchen and bathroom, where food stains, limescale and shower gel build up. See how to wash a rug in the machine.
Criterion 2: a water-repellent surface or a dense, stain-resistant pile. Either the fibre is naturally water-repellent (polypropylene, which pushes surface water away), or the pile is woven densely enough to stop particles working into the weave. Vacuuming and a damp sponge are then enough day to day.

3. In the kitchen: the ideal profile
For the kitchen, two technical profiles stand out.
Washable polyester-cotton (55 kitchen designs). A typical composition of 70 to 75 % polyester plus 20 to 25 % cotton with a small proportion of recycled fibre. Soft under bare feet, absorbs splashes and machine washable at 30 °C subject to the label. Recommended for households with children, or for a cosier feel.
Water-repellent polypropylene (24 kitchen designs). A fibre woven into a dense pile, with water beading on the surface, drying within minutes and cleaning with a damp sponge. Recommended for heavily used kitchens, and for households that value easy upkeep over a plush feel.

4. In the bathroom: the ideal profile
For the bathroom, most Casemira designs combine all 5 criteria.

5. The weekly care routine
For an easy-care rug to stay genuinely easy to care for, a light routine is all it takes.
Daily. Blot splashes of water or fresh stains immediately with a dry cloth. Do not rub (rubbing crushes the pile).
Weekly. Vacuum with a soft brush (to protect the pile on polyester-cotton) or a normal brush (on polypropylene). Take the rug out onto the balcony or terrace to shake out the fine dust.
